Dog Walking In the Forest Or Along A River Bank

Dogs are great companions, and they love to explore the outdoors. But it’s important to make sure that your dog is safe when you’re taking them for walks in the forest or along the river.

In this blog post, I’ll share some tips on how to safely enjoy dog walks in the forest or along the river.

Taking your dog out for a walk in nature is an activity that many of us love and cherish. It’s a great way to bond with your furry companion while getting some fresh air and exercise. However, it’s important to keep safety in mind when taking your dog out for a walk, especially if you’re exploring a new trail in the forests or along a river.

Be Aware of Your Surroundings and choose the right trail

Before you even head out for your adventure, be sure to research the terrain and wildlife of the area where you plan to take your dog walking. Knowing what kind of terrain you’ll encounter and what kind of wildlife can help you prepare better for any potential hazards during your outing. Familiarise yourself with any local laws as well so that you don’t get into trouble while on your adventure.  If you have a young or small dog, you’ll want to choose a trail that is easy to walk and doesn’t have any steep hills or obstacles. If you have an older or larger dog, you can choose a more challenging trail.

Weather Awareness

It’s important to be aware of the weather conditions when you’re taking your dog for a walk in the forest or along the river. If it’s hot, make sure to bring plenty of water for both you and your dog. If it’s cold, ensure your dog stays out of the river to avoid a chill.  On a windy day avoid the forest in case of any falling branches, a knock on the head would not be fun.

Respect Nature & Wildlife

Be mindful when exploring nature with your pup—leave no trace behind! That means picking up after yourselves and being respectful of flora and fauna in the area. Don’t disturb any animals, nesting birds or plants – remember, we are simply visitors to their habitat! Also make sure that your dog is leashed at all times unless allowed (take note of any signage); this will prevent them from running off into unknown territory, getting lost or disturbing wildlife habitats.

Listen Out For the Sound Of Hoofs

Walking your dog in the woods can be a wonderfully peaceful experience, but it’s important to remember that you’re not alone out there! If you see a horse and rider while walking your dog, give them a wide berth. Keeping your pup close and on a short leash can ensure everyone’s safety.  Take a few moments to admire the equestrian pair from a distance as they trot on by.

Look Out For Others

Woodlands provide a great escape for everyone, whether they are runners, cyclists, or walkers. Whenever taking your dog on one of these adventures, it’s important to keep them on a short leash whenever people are coming towards you and be aware that there may be others out enjoying their activity nearby. Maintaining safety for yourself, your pet and those around you is key.

Bring Extra Supplies

Make sure that you have all the necessary supplies before heading out — things like enough water for both you and your pup, first aid kits, food and treats, waste bags, flashlights (in case it gets dark earlier than expected), etc., should all be included in your pack list. Also, make sure that everyone has proper footwear so that no one slips on wet rocks or mud! You can never be too prepared when heading out into nature.

Pick up after your dog. It’s important to pick up after your dog when you’re walking them in the forest or along the river. This will help to keep the area clean and safe for other animals.  So grab a leash and head outdoors – it’s time to hit the trails with your pup in tow! As always remember to bring some Ecohound dog waste bags – Remember to Bag It Bin It!

Have Fun, Relax And Enjoy

Get out and connect with nature. Take a stroll in the great outdoors to seize each moment of beauty our country has to offer.  Happy Dog Walking!
