Life can get hectic and overwhelming at times, leading to an increased feeling of anxiety and stress. National Stress Awareness Day, observed annually on November 2nd, was created to bring attention to the health risks associated with stress. While there are many ways to manage stress, one effective method that has been proven time and time again is owning a dog.

Dogs are known to be loyal and affectionate pets. They offer unconditional love and support, which in turn can boost our mood, making us feel happy and content. When we’re feeling stressed or anxious, a dog’s warm embrace can be just what we need to feel better. It’s also been proven that petting a dog can lower our blood pressure and release hormones that promote a sense of calmness.

They are also super social creatures and can help us become more social too. Dog owners often meet other dog owners at local parks or walking trails. This can lead to new friendships and help us feel more connected to our community. Social interaction is such an important factor in reducing stress, helping us to feel supported and less alone.

Oscar, my dog lives by routine.  Annoying at times, especially at 6am on a Sunday morning when he wants his breakfast.  Dogs need to be fed at specific times, taken for walks, and given attention, which can help us establish a daily routine.  Structure and consistency, can be calming and stress busting when feeling overwhelmed.

Feeling stressed – dogs are the answer

1. Cuddling Your Dog: Cuddling your dog is a great way to reduce stress and anxiety. Studies have found that petting and cuddling with animals can help to lower cortisol levels, which is the hormone responsible for stress. Additionally, cuddling with your dog can help to increase oxytocin levels, which is the hormone responsible for feelings of love and connection.

2. Walking Your Dog: Taking your dog for a walk is another great way to reduce stress. Exercise has been shown to be an effective way to reduce stress and improve mental wellbeing. Walking also gives you time away from the stresses of everyday life and allows you to focus on something else, such as enjoying nature or simply spending time with your pet.

3. Playing With Your Dog: Playing with your dog can also be an effective way to reduce stress. Playing games such as fetch or tug-of-war can help to release endorphins, which are hormones that are responsible for feelings of pleasure and happiness. Additionally, playing with your dog can help you stay active and provide some much needed distraction from stressful situations.

4. Relaxing With Your Dog: Simply relaxing with your dog can also be an effective way to reduce stress levels. Spending time in quiet activities such as reading or watching TV while cuddling with your pet can help you relax and unwind after a long day. Additionally, being around animals has been shown to have calming effects on people, so just spending time in their presence may be enough to reduce stress levels significantly.

Reduces feelings of loneliness.

Loneliness can be a major contributor to stress and anxiety. Owning a dog can provide companionship and help alleviate feelings of loneliness. Dogs provide unconditional love and are always there when we need them. They can also provide a sense of security and comfort when we’re feeling overwhelmed or anxious.

National Stress Awareness Day is an important reminder for everyone to take care of their mental health. While there are many ways to manage stress, owning a dog has been proven to be an effective method.

Furry companions offer unconditional love and support, promote exercise, provide social interaction, establish a daily routine, and reduce feelings of loneliness. If you’re feeling stressed or anxious, consider adopting a dog. Not only will you be offering a loving home to a furry friend in need, but you’ll also be taking a step towards better mental health.
